Bechamel sauce is a creamy white sauce made with flour, butter, milk, and a pinch of salt. It's the perfect base sauce for chicken pot pie, mac and cheese, and the creamy white sauce in lasagna.
Melt butter on medium heat.
Add flour. Mix the flour and butter together to form a white roux.
Cook the white roux for one to two minutes.
Add milk.
Whisk the milk and white roux together continuously for about five to seven minutes until the bechamel sauce thickens up.
The bechamel sauce is done when you can coat a wooden spoon. Add some shredded cheese, melted butter, or cream to change up the sauce. Ground nutmeg and crushed black pepper are also great additions.
